Right then, that is it from what has been one of the games of the season in the TNPL, 2025. Next up, it is the final fixture in Salem before the caravan moves to Tirunelveli. It will be the home side, Salem Spartans, taking on unbeaten Chepauk Super Gillies in what will be a top-of-the-table encounter. Right then, let's recap what happened earlier in the game. A contest that began with rain and got delayed by about half an hour but once it began, there was entertainment all the way. Nellai ruled the opening phase and seemed to have got Madurai on the ropes but a partnership between B Anirudh Sita Ram and Atheeq Rahman stabilized things a bit. However, Nellai got wickets in a heap yet again, but then came that final flourish from Gurjapneet Singh and even P Saravanan hit a couple of sixes to take Madurai to almost 170 runs. For Nellai, Sonu Yadav picked up 3 wickets but went for plenty at the death.
Madurai had a defendable total but conceded too many runs in the Powerplay. However, they did manage to pick wickets right throughout the chase as the likes of Gurjapneet Singh, Rajalingam S and P Saravanan did their jobs well with a couple of wickets each. Then came the crucial stand between Sonu Yadav and Muhammed Adnan Khan and all of a sudden, Nellai needed just 11 off 12 deliveries and Yadav looked in ominous form. Surya Anand S however, had other plans and after knocking over Yadav on the very first ball of the 19th over, he went on to pick 3 more wickets off the next 4 deliveries and finished off with a sensational hat-trick, an effort that will be remembered for years to come in the TNPL.
169 wasn't going to be an easy chase and Nellai lost Ajitesh G on the very first ball of the chase. Skipper Arun Karthik with a quick blitz and he kept going in the Powerplay. Sanjeev Kumar D also fell and Nellai kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Karthik, though, managed to get to a solid half century before eventually falling on 67.
Can you believe it? Muhammed Adnan Khan is left stranded at the non-striker's end and he has just watched 4 wickets fall in front of him and Siechem Madurai Panthers have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. A blockbuster contest in Salem, but at the end of it all, Madurai take all 3 points and it is heartbreak for Nellai Royal Kings who will be left stunned by the manner of this loss.
