Right then, that's it from this contest of PSL 2025. The next match of the tournament is set to be played between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi on 14th April 2025 at 3 pm GMT. You can join us an hour early for the pre-match buildup and updates. Until next time, cheers.
Shaheen Shah Afridi, captain of the Lahore Qalandars, expresses pride in his team’s strong comeback after a tough first game. He credits the players for executing the game plan perfectly, especially in defending a total, something Lahore has historically done well. He notes that the bowlers struggled with their lengths earlier but have now responded with intensity and precision. Shaheen praises debutant Rishad Hossain as a key addition for striking in the middle overs and hails Sam Billings as a classy, 360-degree player. Confidently, he compares his team to an F-16 jet, ready to soar from this point forward.
Fakhar Zaman, named Player of the Match, reflects on his performance with humility. He admits that returning to high-level cricket after a break requires time and adjustment, and while he doesn’t feel he was at his best, he credits Abdullah Shafique and Sam Billings for easing the pressure and supporting his innings. Fakhar highlights Lahore’s strong bowling unit and believes the big total gave them the edge. He acknowledges Quetta's quality spin attack and their smart planning but says he tried to counter them as best he could. He refuses to take sole credit, calling it a complete team effort.
... TIME FOR THE PRESENTATIONS ...
Quetta Gladiators captain Saud Shakeel admits that the team combination wasn’t ideal, acknowledging that they fell short by one fast bowler in the contest. He praises Lahore Qalandars’ batters, Fakhar Zaman, Daryl Mitchell, and Sam Billings for their exceptional performances, especially Billings’ explosive finish. Reflecting on the powerplay collapse, Saud explains that the strategy was to play Shaheen Afridi cautiously, but they failed to execute it, losing key wickets early. He accepts the team’s mistakes and promises improvements in the coming matches. Shakeel also notes that the pitch at Rawalpindi was true to its batting-friendly nature in this match.
In the end, it was a complete team performance by the Lahore Qalandars, dominant with the bat, ruthless with the ball, and sharp in the field. This 79-run victory not only breaks their winless streak but sends a clear message that the defending champions are not to be counted out just yet.
Chasing a daunting target of 220, Quetta Gladiators had a nightmarish start, courtesy of Lahore’s fiery opening bowlers. Captain Shaheen Afridi was in red-hot form, striking twice in his first two overs to remove both Saud Shakeel and Finn Allen. Kusal Mendis and Rilee Rossouw then tried to steady the ship, counter-attacking to put on a 45-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Mendis played a brisk cameo, scoring 28 off 14 balls before falling to Haris Rauf in the final over of the powerplay. Rossouw continued the fight with a powerful 44 off 19 deliveries, but his dismissal to debutant Rishad Hossain in the ninth over turned the tide fully in Lahore’s favour. From there, it was a steady procession of wickets as Quetta’s middle and lower order offered little resistance. Lahore’s bowlers were relentless and disciplined, striking at regular intervals to bowl Quetta out for 140 in just 17.2 overs.
Quetta Gladiators won the toss and elected to field first, aiming to capitalize on the fresh conditions. Their bowlers started well, but they were soon put under pressure by a Lahore batting unit that was finally firing on all cylinders. Fakhar Zaman took charge early, anchoring the innings with a commanding 67 off 39 balls. His stroke play was aggressive and authoritative, laying the foundation for a big total. After a small hiccup in the middle overs, it was Sam Billings who stole the show towards the end. Walking in with intent, the Englishman blazed his way to a stunning 50 off just 19 deliveries, punishing the Quetta bowlers with effortless sixes and clever placements. His late blitz ensured Lahore posted a mammoth 219/6 in their 20 overs, their highest total of the season.
Lahore Qalandars roared back into form in PSL 2025 with a powerful all-round performance as they trounced the Quetta Gladiators by a massive 79 runs to register their first victory of the season. After a string of disappointing outings, this dominant display not only gave them two crucial points but also a much-needed confidence boost moving forward in the tournament.
