Ahead of the much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash in the 2025 Asia Cup, former cricketer Harbhajan Singh has made a strong statement, urging that India-Pakistan relations need to improve before the two countries face each other on the cricket field.
The two cricketing rivals are set to meet in Dubai for the first time since Operation Sindoor, which was launched by India after the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year, which resulted in the tragic death of 26 tourists.
Harbhajan’s Thoughts on India-Pakistan Cricket
“An India-Pakistan match always grabs attention, but after the Operation Sindoor, everyone said there should be no cricket and no business,” Harbhajan stated in a media interview with PTI.
He added, “We were supposed to play the (World Championship of) Legends, but we didn’t play that match against Pakistan.”
Following the attack, the Indian government introduced a policy prohibiting bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan, only allowing participation in multilateral events.
Harbhajan’s Stand on Cricketing Relations with Pakistan
While Harbhajan does not personally support cricket or trade with Pakistan under the current circumstances, he expressed respect for the Indian government’s position.
“Everyone has their own views, but I believe until relations between the two countries improve, there should be no cricket or business between us,” he said. “However, if the government decides the match can happen, then it should happen, but the relationship between the two nations should get better.”
Praise for India’s Cricket Team
Harbhajan praised the Indian cricket team for quickly adjusting after the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the shortest format of the game. He believes that India’s cricket team remains strong despite the absence of these two key players.
“If there’s any team that can beat India, it’s India itself. Our cricket is at a different level,” Harbhajan remarked. “Even with Virat and Rohit gone, the team is completely ready. Playing in Dubai is like playing at home, and the spinners will play a huge role. I hope the team brings the cup back,” he added.
Support for Punjab in Crisis
Apart from discussing cricket, Harbhajan also expressed concern for Punjab, which is currently facing devastating floods. He urged people to support the flood-affected areas in any way they can.
“Punjabi people have the spirit to stand up for anyone in trouble, not just their own people. Punjab is going through a disaster right now, and many have been affected, including farmers. I would have been nothing without Punjab. Your support is important, no matter the form it takes,” Harbhajan emphasized.
