India’s fourth Test in Manchester saw a bold call from skipper Shubman Gill — handing debutant Anshul Kamboj the new ball over seasoned pacer Mohammed Siraj. The decision sparked mixed reactions, but veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin offered a nuanced take, calling it “highly debatable” yet justifiable given the young pacer’s skillset.
Ashwin Backs Gill’s Thought Process Despite Risk
Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, R Ashwin admitted the move raised eyebrows but said he understood the logic behind Gill’s strategy.
“Shubman Gill gave the new ball to Anshul Kamboj, and that is highly debatable. But I can see why—Kamboj has good wrist position and swings the ball both ways. Siraj, on the other hand, is very effective with the old ball,” Ashwin explained.
Kamboj’s first over in international cricket was far from ideal. England opener Ben Duckett took full advantage, smashing three boundaries off the debutant to set the tone early. However, Kamboj gradually settled and found his rhythm as the day progressed.
‘Strong Comeback’ by Kamboj Wins Praise
Ashwin acknowledged the pressure Kamboj faced on debut and urged fans to show patience, emphasizing that partnering Jasprit Bumrah under the threat of ‘Bazball’ was no small task.
“To expect Anshul Kamboj to bowl in tandem with Jassi on debut, against Bazball? That’s a big ask,” he said.
“His first spell was disappointing, but he bounced back nicely. If conditions help tomorrow, I wouldn’t be surprised if he picks up a few more wickets.”
And Kamboj did strike back. After a tough start, he got his maiden international wicket in his third spell, dismissing a dangerous Ben Duckett for 94 — denying the southpaw his second century of the series.
Day 3 Beckons: England on Top, India Need Answers
At stumps on Day 2, England were cruising at 225/2, with Joe Root and Ollie Pope unbeaten. They trail India’s first-innings total of 358 by just 133 runs, and with momentum on their side, the third day could prove pivotal.
Shubman Gill now faces the challenge of regrouping his bowling attack, with hopes pinned on a stronger showing from both seasoned pacers and debutant Kamboj, who’ll look to build on his fighting start.
