History
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was introduced in the 2006–07 season as India’s first domestic T20 competition. Named after Syed Mushtaq Ali, the legendary Indian batsman known for his fearless style and historic overseas century, the tournament aimed to popularize the shortest format at the domestic level.
Initially structured around zonal teams, the tournament has evolved to feature state and union territory teams, making it a highly competitive platform. It plays a vital role in shaping the careers of India’s future T20 stars.
Format
The tournament features a league-cum-knockout format:
- Group Stage: Teams are divided into multiple Elite and Plate groups.
- Knockout Stage: Top teams qualify for pre-quarterfinals, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final.
- All matches are played in the T20 format, each side facing 20 overs.
- Teams often play in neutral venues for fairness and exposure.
