England opener Zak Crawley has spoken out for the first time about the on-field altercation with Shubman Gill during the third Test at Lord’s. The exchange, which saw Gill hurl an abusive sledge caught on the stump mic, has since sparked heated discussions. Crawley, however, has clarified that there was no foul play on his part and that the entire incident was a result of miscommunication.
“I Wasn’t Aware We Were Late,” Says Crawley
Speaking after Day 2 of the ongoing fourth Test, Crawley addressed the controversy and insisted there was no intention to delay the game.
“No, it wasn’t intentional. I sit in my spot until the umpires go out. I walked out when I saw them go. I wasn’t aware we were 90 seconds late, but fair enough,” Crawley explained.
His comments come in response to Gill’s earlier remarks accusing him of wasting time, which led to the Indian batter losing his cool on the field.
Crawley Enjoyed the Heated Moment
Rather than being offended by the verbal spat, Crawley said he relished the intensity of the exchange.
“I’ve always enjoyed that part of cricket, especially when you’re batting. It’s two of you against eleven, and they’re desperate to get you out, chirping you constantly,” he said.
He added that while he usually lets such moments slide, this time he felt like pushing back.
“I loved that little eight-minute passage. No one crossed the line. It was just competitive cricket, and I really enjoyed it,” Crawley added.
Special Praise for Rishabh Pant
Crawley also had words of admiration for Rishabh Pant, who batted courageously despite a foot injury.
“Not many people in the world would be able to come out and bat like he did on one foot,” he said.
Pant’s grit and determination earned him respect from players on both sides.
England in Command After Day 2
Day 2 of the fourth Test saw England take control of the match. The hosts bowled out India for 358, taking the final six wickets for just 96 runs. Ben Stokes led the bowling attack with a five-wicket haul—his first in Tests since 2017.
In reply, England’s openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett provided a solid start with a 166-run partnership. While both missed out on centuries, their effort laid the foundation for a strong response. England finished the day at 225/2, with Ollie Pope (20*) and Joe Root (11*) unbeaten at the crease.
