Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his ODI debut on February 6, 2025, against England in Nagpur, is part of the current ODI squad for the ongoing series against Australia.
He didn’t get a game in the first ODI and is expected to warm the bench again for the second match at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday (October 23). Many fans and former cricketers have voiced their support for including him in the playing XI, but for now, that seems unlikely.
Batting Coach Drops a Strong Hint
At the pre-match press conference in Adelaide, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak was asked if Jaiswal might feature in the upcoming game. While he didn’t give a straight “yes” or “no,” he made it clear that the left-hander will have to be patient.
“He’s in the squad, he practices hard, and all youngsters know their time will come. At the end of the day, only 11 can play, so you have to wait for your turn and then perform,” Kotak said.
Rohit–Gill Pair Still the First Choice
Jaiswal has made his mark as an opener across formats, but India currently has Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill at the top of the order. Despite their failure in the first ODI, both are ranked among the top three ODI batters in the world and are unlikely to be dropped after one bad outing.
The team management is expected to back this experienced pair for the second ODI as well.
When Could Jaiswal Get His Chance?
For now, Jaiswal is likely to get a game only if there’s an injury or a major change in team strategy. His ODI debut earlier this year came when Virat Kohli was unavailable. Once Kohli returned, Jaiswal had to make way for him again.
The young left-hander remains a key part of India’s long-term plans, but his immediate inclusion in the XI looks uncertain ahead of the second ODI in Adelaide.
