Why MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli Excelled as Test Captains: Mohammad Kaif Explains

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has broken down the reasons behind MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli’s exceptional success as Test captains at home. His analysis comes in the wake of India’s 0–2 whitewash against South Africa — the second home series defeat under head coach Gautam Gambhir, following a 3–0 loss to New Zealand last year.

Kaif Highlights Dhoni’s Ability to Build a Comfortable, Confident Team

In a video shared on X, Kaif praised MS Dhoni’s leadership style, saying the former India captain created an atmosphere where players felt supported and understood their roles clearly.

“Dhoni backed his players first. He built an environment where they felt comfortable,” Kaif said.

“He had deep knowledge and read the game so well that he built his team accordingly. He used Ashwin, Jadeja and even Pragyan Ojha perfectly — and all of them took wickets.”

Kaif added that Dhoni’s presence on the field gave India a huge advantage.

Dhoni captained India in 30 home Tests, winning 21, making him the second most successful Indian Test captain on home soil.

Kohli Took Dhoni’s Legacy “One Step Ahead,” Says Kaif

Kaif also praised Virat Kohli’s bold and aggressive style of captaincy, saying Kohli elevated India’s Test cricket standards even further.

“Virat Kohli went one step ahead of Dhoni,” Kaif said.

“His aggression came out when the team was under pressure. He told his bowlers clearly — if you want to play, you must take 20 wickets. Otherwise, don’t come to the ground.”

Kohli’s ability to maintain a strong and consistent core helped India dominate at home.

He lost only two home Tests in his career, winning 24 out of 31 — the best home record for any Indian Test captain.

Kohli’s Mastery: Using Pacers and Spinners with Precision

Kaif also recalled how South Africa had suffered heavily on their previous tour to India when Kohli was captain.

“Virat assessed the opposition and used his fast bowlers superbly, but he also backed his spinners,” Kaif said.

“That balance — aggression plus tactical reading — is what made both Dhoni and Kohli such great captains.”

Dhoni and Kohli: India’s Benchmark for Test Leadership

With Dhoni’s calm, player-first approach and Kohli’s aggression-driven, wickets-first mindset, both captains created eras of dominance at home — setting benchmarks that future leaders will be measured against.
