Who Should Replace Shubman Gill in the 2nd IND vs SA Test? Ex-Captain Answers

Former India captain Anil Kumble believes that if Shubman Gill is not fit for the second Test against South Africa, Sai Sudharsan should return to the playing XI. The second Test begins on November 22 in Guwahati, and Gill’s availability remains uncertain after he was forced to retire hurt in Kolkata.

Gill’s Injury Leaves India in a Wait-and-Watch Situation

Gill initially appeared to have suffered a minor neck sprain—reportedly from sleeping awkwardly—when he walked off on Day 2 at Eden Gardens. But the injury turned out to be more serious, requiring hospitalisation. Although he has since been discharged, the BCCI is awaiting a final medical clearance before confirming his participation.

Kumble: “If Gill Isn’t Fit, Sudharsan Comes In”

Speaking on Star Sports, Kumble said India should avoid unnecessary changes despite the heavy defeat in the first Test.

“India will certainly be hoping that Shubman Gill is fit for the next Test,” Kumble said. “If he isn’t, Sai Sudharsan will likely come back in. If India continues with six bowlers—two pacers and four spinners—then the rest of the team should remain the same. That might be the only change.”

Why Padikkal Isn’t the Ideal Option

Kumble also discussed another potential replacement — Devdutt Padikkal — but explained why he doesn’t fit into the current combination.

“If India chooses not to go with that combination, the other batting option is Devdutt Padikkal. But bringing him in would make the entire top order left-handed, which could invite someone like Simon Harmer to bowl all day,” Kumble warned.

He further added that India are unlikely to pick three seamers unless Guwahati presents a green pitch — something that remains uncertain.

“Overall, India should stick with a similar lineup. The only possible change is Gill, if he’s fit. If he isn’t, Sai Sudharsan comes in.”

Sudharsan’s Positioning and Recent Experience

Sai Sudharsan made his Test debut during the England tour earlier this year, batting at No. 3. However, he was left out for this series as India opted for left-handed all-rounder Washington Sundar instead.
