Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ODI Days May Be Over, Says Ex-Selector

Reports suggest that India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia in October may be the last for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the 50-over format.

Debate Ignites Over ODI Future of Indian Legends

The cricketing world is buzzing with debate about the ODI futures of Kohli and Rohit. Despite their good form, both stars reportedly won’t be part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Former BCCI selector Devang Gandhi believes it’s time to pave the way for young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan.

Youth Must Get a Chance, Says Gandhi

“How can you keep players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Sai Sudharsan out when they’ve proven their adaptability?” Gandhi told The Times of India. “The bigger transition is moving from T20 cricket to Tests. Once players succeed in Tests and have the power-hitting ability, ODIs should become easier for them. Selectors and management need to come together and make these tough calls.”

Domestic Cricket Won’t Be Enough to Extend Careers

Though the BCCI hasn’t officially announced anything, reports suggest Kohli and Rohit may have to perform in domestic cricket to stay in contention for ODIs. Gandhi, however, feels this won’t be a practical route, especially as India prepares for the World Cup.

“If one of them isn’t in form a year from now, and we need to bring in a replacement, there won’t be enough time to ready a new player,” Gandhi explained.

Respecting Their Legacy, But Time Moves On

“There’s no doubt about the immense contributions of Rohit and Virat to Indian cricket,” Gandhi added. “But time waits for no one.”
