India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy is on the verge of creating history. As India faces Australia in the fifth and final T20I at The Gabba, Brisbane on Saturday (November 8), the 33-year-old spinner will aim to become the fastest Indian bowler to reach 50 wickets in T20 Internationals.
Chakaravarthy Eyes New Indian Record
Since making his T20I debut in 2021, Chakaravarthy has played 28 matches, claiming 45 wickets so far. If he picks up five wickets against Australia, he will surpass Kuldeep Yadav’s record, who reached the 50-wicket milestone in his 30th T20I against the West Indies in 2023.
Fastest to 50 wickets in T20Is for India:
| Player | Matches to 50 wickets |
| Kuldeep Yadav | 30 |
| Arshdeep Singh | 33 |
| Ravi Bishnoi | 33 |
| Yuzvendra Chahal | 34 |
| Jasprit Bumrah | 41 |
Chakaravarthy in Global Race Too
If he achieves the feat, Chakaravarthy will also join the elite group of the fastest bowlers in world T20I history to 50 wickets — a list currently topped by Dhruvkumar Maisuria of Botswana, who did it in just 22 matches.
Fastest to 50 wickets in T20Is (World):
| Player | Team | Matches |
| Dhruvkumar Maisuria | Botswana | 22 |
| Syazrul Idrus | Malaysia | 25 |
| Ajantha Mendis | Sri Lanka | 26 |
| Mark Adair | Ireland | 28 |
| Alpesh Ramjani | Uganda | 28 |
| Hernan Fennell | Argentina | 28 |
| Sandeep Lamichhane | Nepal | 29 |
| Kuldeep Yadav | India | 30 |
Bumrah Also Chasing a Historic Milestone
It’s not just Varun in the spotlight — Jasprit Bumrah also has a chance to etch his name into the record books. The pace spearhead currently has 99 T20I wickets in 79 matches.
If he takes one more wicket in the upcoming game, Bumrah will become the first Indian bowler — and only the fifth in the world — to claim 100 wickets across all three formats.
The elite list includes Tim Southee, Lasith Malinga, Shakib Al Hasan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi.
