Australia’s dream run at the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 came to a heartbreaking end in Navi Mumbai, as the defending champions crashed out after a stunning defeat against hosts India.
From Unbeaten Dominance to Sudden Exit
Led by skipper Alyssa Healy, Australia stormed through the group stages as the only unbeaten side in the tournament. But in a dramatic knockout clash, their campaign ended when India pulled off one of the most remarkable chases in World Cup history.
Phoebe Litchfield’s brilliant century helped Australia post a massive 338, but India responded in style — powered by Jemimah Rodrigues’ unbeaten 127 and captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s gritty 89. The hosts chased the total with five wickets in hand, leaving Australia stunned.
“It Still Hurts” — Healy Reflects on the Loss
A week after the exit, Alyssa Healy spoke candidly on the Willow Talk Cricket podcast, admitting that the semifinal defeat continues to weigh on her mind.
“I won’t lie, I’ve been better,” Healy said. “We played some really incredible cricket over seven weeks but just couldn’t get past that Indian hurdle. It’s disappointing, but I’m proud of this group and what we’ve achieved.”
“We Were a Bit Under-Par” Despite 338
Even after posting 338, Healy felt Australia had left a few runs on the table.
“I actually thought we were a bit under-par,” she reflected. “When Pez (Ellyse Perry) and Phoebe were batting, we were looking at 350-plus. If we had pushed up there, it might have made a difference.”
The skipper added that the result hurt even more because of how consistent her team had been throughout the competition.
“Everyone was contributing, everyone was playing out of their skin, and we just had half an off night in a knockout game. It’s sad that we don’t have a trophy to show for it.”
Costly Drops and a Chaotic Moment
Two dropped catches off Jemimah Rodrigues — who went on to remain unbeaten on 127 — proved decisive in shifting the momentum India’s way.
Healy also recalled her own dismissal during a chaotic period marred by lighting issues.
“There was a lot happening around the sightscreen and lights. It was frustrating. If I had waited a minute longer, we’d have gone off the field and come back again,” she said.
“It’ll Haunt Me for a While”
Despite the disappointment, Healy was gracious in defeat, crediting India for their composure under pressure.
“India got themselves over the line, and it’s great for women’s cricket,” she admitted. “It’ll haunt me for a little while, but that’s okay.”
