‘They Wanted Me To…’: Ravichandran Ashwin Opens Up About His Retirement

Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement from international cricket on December 18, 2024, sent shockwaves through the cricketing world. The legendary off-spinner, known for his sharp mind and match-winning spells, played his final game for India against Australia in Adelaide — a moment that few saw coming.

A Sudden Decision That Stunned Everyone

Ashwin was part of India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad and had just played the rain-hit third Test at The Gabba in Brisbane. Then, out of nowhere, he decided to call time on his international career.

His exit wasn’t just unexpected — it was emotional. Fans, experts, and even his teammates were left wondering what prompted such a big call in the middle of a series. Now, ten months later, Ashwin has finally broken his silence.

“No One Asked Me To Leave”

Ashwin made it clear that his retirement wasn’t forced on him by anyone. In fact, a few people actually tried to convince him to stay on.

“No one told me that I should go; no one said there’s no place for me in the team. Actually, before I took the decision, 2–3 people told me not to take it. In fact, they wanted me to play more,” Ashwin revealed on his YouTube channel.

Among those urging him to reconsider were India’s captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Rohit Sharma also told me to think about it; Gauti bhai told me to think again. But I didn’t talk much about it with Ajit Agarkar (chairman of selectors),” he added.

Ashwin said the decision was deeply personal.

“Retirement is never an easy call. These are individual decisions — and this one was mine,” he concluded.

A Career Few Can Match

Over a 14-year international career, Ashwin carved out a place among India’s all-time greats. He represented the country in 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, taking 537, 156, and 72 wickets respectively.

He played pivotal roles in India’s 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy victories under MS Dhoni’s leadership. His ability to outthink batters, especially in home conditions, made him a nightmare for opponents.

Life Beyond the India Jersey

After retiring from international cricket, Ashwin continued in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings in 2025. But a tough season led him to step away from the tournament as well later that year.

However, the off-spinner isn’t done with the game. In December 2025, Ashwin will make history as the first Indian cricketer to play in the Big Bash League, having signed with Sydney Thunder. He’ll be playing under the captaincy of David Warner, opening a new chapter in his career.

A Farewell on His Own Terms

Ashwin’s decision to retire wasn’t about pressure or politics — it was about choice. He walked away while still in control, leaving behind a career filled with brilliance, fight, and unforgettable spells.

As he gets ready to take the field in Australia once again, this time in a new role, fans know one thing for sure — Ashwin’s story is far from over.
