India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has brushed aside concerns about his batting form despite a disappointing run with the bat during the 2025 Asia Cup, where he managed only 72 runs in six innings. Speaking after India’s title-winning campaign in Dubai, the star batter insisted that he’s “out of runs, not out of form,” emphasizing that his preparation and rhythm remain intact.
‘I’m Not Out of Form, Just Out of Runs’
Suryakumar started the tournament with a modest unbeaten 7 against UAE* and a steady 47 against Pakistan, but his next four outings yielded just 18 runs, bringing his average down to 18 with a strike rate of 101.41. In the final, he was dismissed cheaply during the powerplay after mistiming a slower delivery from Shaheen Afridi.
“I feel I am not out of form, I feel I am out of runs,” Suryakumar said in the post-match press conference after India’s five-wicket win over Pakistan in the final. “I believe more in what I am doing in the nets and my preparation. So in matches, things are on autopilot.”
Captaincy Unaffected Despite Batting Slump
While his batting numbers were below expectations, Suryakumar’s leadership remained composed and effective. Abhishek Sharma, named Player of the Tournament, praised his skipper for maintaining the same energy and focus regardless of personal performance.
“When you are not scoring runs, it’s usually difficult to lead the team, but Surya bhai was the same throughout, whether he scored runs or not,” Abhishek said.
Despite Suryakumar’s lean patch, India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, and his tactical decisions drew little criticism.
‘We Achieved What We Wanted To’
Reflecting on India’s campaign, Suryakumar expressed satisfaction with how his team handled pressure moments and delivered in the knockout stages.
“What we wanted to achieve in this tournament, we have achieved,” he said. “This wasn’t like a bilateral series — once we entered the Super Four, I told the boys to treat each game like a knockout. We played a semi-final type match against Sri Lanka and then a perfect final. There were nerves, responsibility, and pressure — but we handled it perfectly.”
With India lifting the 2025 Asia Cup trophy unbeaten, Suryakumar may not have had a dream tournament with the bat, but his calm leadership and focus on team success ensured the Men in Blue achieved their ultimate goal.
