Former cricketer Suresh Raina has stirred a fresh controversy, claiming that no Indian player was keen to face Pakistan or even participate in the Asia Cup 2025. According to him, the players were forced to take part only because the BCCI agreed under government clearance.
India’s Win Overshadowed by Off-Field Tensions
India defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets in their Group A clash, a result that nearly guaranteed them a place in the Super Fours. Yet, the atmosphere around the team suggested that this was far from a normal India–Pakistan encounter.
Public emotions were already heightened following calls for a boycott, and the players themselves appeared uncomfortable with the situation. The team’s decision to skip the customary post-match handshake was seen as an act of solidarity, but their expressions and body language reflected the weight of circumstances beyond cricket.
Raina’s Explosive Remark
Speaking to Sports Tak, Raina said the players’ true feelings were different from what unfolded on the field:
“If you personally ask the players, none of them wants to play the Asia Cup. In a way, they are forced because the BCCI has agreed to it. If Suryakumar Yadav and his team were asked about their personal opinion, they would have said no. None of them wanted to play.”
Pakistan’s Strong Reaction
The no-handshake move created ripples across the cricketing world. The Pakistan Cricket Board lodged a formal complaint, while former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar openly expressed anger on television. To add to the drama, Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha boycotted the post-match presentation, breaking a long-standing tradition that symbolised respect in the game.
Beyond the Gentlemen’s Game
What was supposed to be a cricketing spectacle turned into a reflection of the strained ties between the two nations. While India walked away with an important win, the larger narrative has become less about runs and wickets and more about politics, emotions, and the players’ silent protest on the field.
