Star Australian Fast Bowler Ruled Out of First Ashes Test in Perth

Australia have suffered a setback ahead of the 2025-26 Ashes series, as fast bowler Sean Abbott has been ruled out of the first Test in Perth due to a moderate-grade hamstring injury.

The five-match series is set to kick off at Optus Stadium from November 21 to 25, and Abbott’s absence leaves a hole in the squad’s fast-bowling depth. The 33-year-old sustained the injury while playing for New South Wales against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Cricket Australia confirmed that scans revealed a moderate strain, ruling Abbott out of contention for the opener. A tailored recovery plan will be drawn up over the next few weeks.

Hazlewood Cleared After Hamstring Scare

In the same match, fellow pacer Josh Hazlewood also raised concerns when he walked off the field complaining of tightness in his right hamstring. Fortunately, precautionary scans cleared him of any serious damage.

A Cricket Australia statement said,

“Josh Hazlewood will join the Australian squad as planned for the Perth Test. He underwent precautionary scans which have cleared him of muscle strain and will train as scheduled ahead of the first Test.”

Hazlewood’s participation remains vital, especially with skipper Pat Cummins already ruled out of the series opener.

Doggett in Line for Possible Debut

If Hazlewood is rested as a precaution, Brendan Doggett, the South Australian seamer, could be in line for a Test debut.

Captain Pat Cummins, speaking to Fox Sports, praised Doggett’s recent form:

“He’s been bowling really well over the last couple of games. It’s always nice to have a squad full of guys in form, and he’s certainly one of them.”

Cummins Targets Return for Second Test

Cummins, who is missing the Perth Test for personal reasons, remains optimistic about returning for the second Ashes Test at the Gabba (December 4–8).

“That’s what we’re building towards,” he confirmed.

Outlook

Despite the early injury concerns, Australia remain confident heading into the series opener. With Hazlewood expected to recover in time and promising depth in the squad, the hosts will look to make a strong start in their pursuit to retain the Ashes on home soil.
