India’s Test captain Shubman Gill has brushed off concerns about his unusual run of bad luck at the toss, insisting that losing six in a row doesn’t matter as long as the team keeps winning. Gill led India to a commanding innings-and-140-run victory over the West Indies in the opening Test on October 4, sealing a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Despite the streak, Gill remained upbeat and focused on the team’s dominant performance, calling it a “perfect game” in every aspect.
Jadeja’s All-Round Brilliance Lights Up Ahmedabad
Vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja was the star of the show, producing an unbeaten hundred and picking up four wickets to dismantle the visitors. His all-round display, backed by centuries from KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel, set the tone for India’s emphatic win.
“Six (toss) losses in a row, but as long as we keep winning the matches, it does not matter. Honestly, I think this was the perfect game for us. Three centuries and we fielded really well, so no complaints,” Gill said at the post-match presentation.
Ideal Conditions and Strong Batting Effort
Gill praised the pitch conditions, calling it a great surface for batting. He acknowledged that while he and some others couldn’t convert their starts, the batters who did make the most of it turned the game in India’s favor.
“Whenever you get a start, I think it was a pretty good wicket to bat on and we both got starts but could not convert, but we are happy for the centurions,” the skipper added.
Spin Depth Proves India’s Strength
India’s spin attack once again highlighted its depth and versatility. Apart from Jadeja’s heroics, Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with two key wickets in the second innings, making life miserable for the West Indian batters.
“When you have quality spinners like that, it is difficult to rotate, but it is better to have too many options than too few — that is the challenge and fun of playing in India,” Gill said.
Team Bonding and Resilience Impress the Captain
Gill also spoke about how the team’s chemistry and resilience have grown over the last two years, crediting their ability to fight through tough moments and find match-winners in every situation.
“The good thing is there is always someone ready to make a difference. Over a period of two years, how we bonded as a team and how we got out of tough situations was really pleasing for me to see,” he concluded.
Eyes on Delhi for Series Win
With the first Test comfortably in the bag, Gill and his men will now turn their focus to the second and final match of the series, set to begin on October 10 in Delhi. A win there would complete a dominant home series sweep against the West Indies.
