Shubman Gill Scripts History with Fifth Ton in a Calendar Year

Shubman Gill added another golden chapter to his career on Saturday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The Indian skipper smashed his fifth Test century of the year against the West Indies, joining an exclusive list of legends who’ve achieved this rare milestone.

This knock not only strengthened India’s grip on the match but also showcased Gill’s evolution as a top-class batter and leader.

Joining an Elite Club with Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar

With this century, Gill equalled Virat Kohli’s record of scoring five Test hundreds in a calendar year — a feat Kohli achieved in 2017 and then again in 2018. Kohli took 16 innings to do it in 2017 and 24 innings in 2018.

Sachin Tendulkar, another giant of the game, registered four centuries as captain in 1997, taking 17 innings to get there. Gill, on the other hand, raced to this record in just 12 innings — the fastest by any Indian skipper.

It’s a statement of intent from a young captain who continues to rise rapidly through the ranks.

India Dominates with a Mammoth First Innings

India won the toss and opted to bat first — a decision that paid off handsomely. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gill led from the front, scoring brilliant hundreds and laying the foundation for a massive total of 518/5 before the declaration.

KL Rahul gave India a solid start with 38 runs before Jomel Warrican got the breakthrough. Sai Sudharsan joined Jaiswal and built a superb 243-run partnership before falling for 87. Jaiswal’s fluent innings ended in heartbreak when a mix-up led to his run-out on 175, denying him a maiden double century.

Nitish Kumar Reddy contributed a handy 49, and Dhruv Jurel added 44 before Roston Chase dismissed him. By the end of 134.2 overs, India had stamped its authority on the match.

A Defining Knock from a Rising Leader

Gill’s century was more than just a personal milestone — it was a captain’s statement. In just 12 innings, he has matched legends, guided India to strong totals, and shown that he belongs on the biggest stage.

As India looks ahead in the series, Gill’s form and leadership will be a key factor. With five centuries already this year, he’s not just chasing records — he’s setting new benchmarks.
