Shubman Gill Creates History, Wins 4th ICC Player of the Month Award

India Test captain Shubman Gill has made history by winning his fourth ICC Player of the Month award, surpassing all other male cricketers in the record books. The 25-year-old edged past England skipper Ben Stokes and South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder to claim the July 2025 title, thanks to his exceptional run in the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy.

A Record-Breaking Series Against England

Leading India in a Test series for the first time — with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having recently retired — Gill delivered a performance for the ages. He amassed 754 runs in 10 innings, the most ever by an Indian captain in a single series and second only to Don Bradman’s 801 against England in 1937.

The highlight came in Birmingham, where Gill smashed a double century and piled up 430 runs across two innings. Reflecting on his achievement, Gill said, “This award holds more meaning as it comes during my first Test series as captain. The double ton in Birmingham will always be one of the proudest moments of my career.”

Consistency at the Highest Level

Gill’s latest honour adds to his previous ICC Player of the Month wins in January 2023, September 2023, and February 2025. The recently concluded five-match series ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw, with India bouncing back after losing the opener in Leeds, winning in Birmingham, falling narrowly at Lord’s, drawing in Manchester, and sealing a thrilling six-run victory in the Oval decider.

Looking Ahead

Grateful to his teammates and the jury, Gill said, “The series was a great learning curve for me as captain. We had outstanding performances from both sides. I look forward to keeping this form and bringing more laurels to the country.”

Gill’s next challenge will be leading the North Zone in the Duleep Trophy, starting later this month.
