Speculation that Shreyas Iyer could become India’s next ODI captain has now been dismissed. Former India opener Aakash Chopra clarified that the BCCI already sees Shubman Gill as Rohit Sharma’s successor, ending the buzz around Iyer.
Gill Emerging as the Future Leader
Over the past year, Gill has grown rapidly into a leadership role. During the England Test series, he captained India to a 2-2 draw and scored a remarkable 754 runs, one of the finest overseas efforts by an Indian batter. Furthermore, the selectors reinstated him as T20I vice-captain, reinforcing their long-term trust in his abilities.
Chopra’s Strong Statement
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra addressed the chatter about Iyer. He firmly rejected the claim that Iyer was next in line.
“The rumour markets are hot. It was said Shreyas Iyer would become the captain, that he would pip Shubman Gill to the post. In my opinion, the next captain has already been chosen, even without an official appointment. It will be Shubman Gill.”
Signs Pointing to Gill
Chopra also pointed out the consistent pattern in Gill’s elevation across formats. He explained that Gill’s role as Test captain, T20I vice-captain, and ODI vice-captain leaves little doubt about the board’s intentions.
“He is the Test captain. He has been made T20I vice-captain. He is already ODI vice-captain. So don’t ask the question — Shubman Gill is going to be the next captain.”
The Road Ahead
With Iyer’s chances ruled out and Gill steadily building his credentials, the transition appears inevitable. All signs suggest that the ODI captaincy baton will soon pass to Shubman Gill, making him the face of India’s future across formats.
