Former Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Shreevats Goswami has made a clear appeal to Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the Indian senior men’s team selection committee, urging him to reconsider Mohammed Shami for a spot in the national team after the fast bowler’s standout performance in the Ranji Trophy.
Shami’s Stellar Performance in the Ranji Trophy
On Tuesday at Eden Gardens, Shami proved his fitness and skill, delivering exceptional figures of 5/38 as Bengal triumphed over Gujarat by 141 runs in their Ranji Trophy encounter. Shami had already taken three wickets in the first innings, further solidifying his dominance with a total of 8 wickets across both innings. With this performance, Shami has now taken 15 wickets in just two matches, following his 7-wicket haul in Bengal’s game against Uttarakhand.
A Powerful Message to Agarkar
“8 wickets on a pitch that had little for fast bowlers. @MdShami11 is fit & bowling at his best. Also, a brilliant comeback by Shahbaz Ahmed, picking up a 6-fer in the first innings. Bengal is off to a brilliant start with back-to-back wins at home,” Goswami tweeted, making it clear that Shami is in top form and ready for international duty.
Will Shami Get His India Call-Up?
Shami’s recent performances highlight his readiness to return to international cricket, but his future with the Indian team remains uncertain. Despite his excellent form, Shami has fallen out of favor with the current management, largely due to ongoing differences with chief selector Agarkar. As a result, Shami was excluded from the India A squad for the multi-day series against South Africa A.
Shami’s Fitness Concerns Put to Rest
Shami’s performance for Bengal has silenced any lingering doubts about his fitness. He last represented India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, and with his recent showings, it remains to be seen whether he will be rewarded with a spot in the Indian squad for the upcoming two-Test series against South Africa, which begins on November 14 in Kolkata.
