Pakistan’s star all-rounder Shadab Khan is on the verge of making his international comeback as he’s likely to be included in the national squad for the upcoming T20I Tri-Series featuring Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, scheduled to begin on November 17 in Lahore and Rawalpindi.
The 26-year-old leg-spinner, who underwent shoulder surgery earlier this year, recently featured in a practice game in Lahore, where his performance and recovery were closely observed by selectors, including Aaqib Javed, the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Full Recovery and Selectors’ Confidence
After months of rehabilitation under NCA’s medical team, Shadab seems to have made a full recovery. “Shadab appears to have recovered well from his shoulder injury and could be a late addition for the T20 Tri-Series,” a source close to the selectors confirmed.
Shadab also completed his final rehabilitation process at the academy before taking the field. His return would provide Pakistan with the all-round balance they’ve been missing in the shorter format.
Possible Captaincy Role on the Horizon
Sources also suggest that Shadab could be next in line to take over the T20I captaincy from Salman Ali Agha once he regains consistent form and match fitness. His leadership experience and versatility make him a strong contender to lead the side in the future.
Match Fitness Plan and Comeback Route
The selectors are considering adding Shadab to the ongoing home series against Sri Lanka to help him regain full match fitness under the national team’s supervision. Another option being discussed is for him to play a first-class match in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy before the tri-series begins.
“The selectors are eager to have him back as soon as he’s match-fit since his inclusion adds much-needed balance to the side and aligns with head coach Mike Hesson’s preference for all-round players,” the source added.
Young Pacers Impress During Practice Match
Alongside Shadab, young fast bowler Ali Reza also participated in the same practice match and impressed with his bowling rhythm. The uncapped U-19 pacer, who has been recovering from an injury, gained attention with his pace and consistency. Reza has already made waves in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with his promising performances.
Shadab’s Last Outing for Pakistan
Shadab last represented Pakistan in the home T20I series against Bangladesh earlier this year, before undergoing shoulder surgery. His absence was felt in both leadership and performance aspects of the team.
Now, with his recovery nearly complete, the selectors are optimistic that his return will bring depth and stability to Pakistan’s T20 setup ahead of the tri-series.
