Rohit Sharma to Play Vijay Hazare Trophy Amid BCCI’s ‘No Domestic, No Selection’ Rule

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has drawn a firm line — no player, regardless of stature, will be considered for India’s ODI squad without proving match fitness through domestic cricket.

In response, Rohit Sharma has confirmed his participation in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, assuring the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) of his availability. However, uncertainty remains over Virat Kohli’s involvement, as reports suggest he’s still in London.

No Match Fitness, No Spot in the Squad

With both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having retired from Test and T20I cricket, their ODI fitness is now under scrutiny. The selectors have made it clear that continued selection will depend on domestic participation and consistent performances.

The Vijay Hazare Trophy begins on December 24, right after India’s three-match home ODI series against South Africa (December 3–9), and before another home ODI series versus New Zealand (starting January 11).

Will Rohit Play the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Too?

There’s also growing buzz about Rohit’s potential return for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, beginning November 26. Reports indicate that the star batter has already informed the MCA of his possible participation.

He has been spotted training regularly at Sharad Pawar Indoor Academy in Mumbai. Meanwhile, BCCI officials are hopeful that Kohli will soon return to India and feature in domestic competitions to stay in contention for ODI selection.

BCCI’s Message: Perform or Perish

The BCCI’s stance is clear — “No Domestic, No Selection.” Every cricketer, regardless of experience or reputation, must prove match readiness in domestic tournaments.

Both Rohit and Kohli have expressed their desire to continue playing till the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, but with increased competition and stricter selection norms, they’ll need to stay active on the domestic front.

Rohit’s Strong Form in Australia

Rohit Sharma’s decision comes on the back of excellent form during India’s recent Australia ODI series, where he was named Player of the Series. The veteran opener produced two stellar knocks in three games — including a match-winning century — while Kohli bounced back from a slow start to score an unbeaten 87 in the final ODI.

As both stalwarts eye extended careers in the 50-over format, the Vijay Hazare Trophy could serve as the perfect stage to reaffirm their commitment and form.
