Ravichandran Ashwin Creates History: Joins Sydney Thunder as First Indian to Sign for BBL

Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has etched his name in the record books by becoming the first Indian cricketer to sign for the Big Bash League (BBL). The 39-year-old will represent Sydney Thunder in the 2025–26 season, marking a new chapter in his illustrious career after retiring from international cricket in December 2025 and stepping away from the IPL earlier this year.

A Historic Move Down Under

Ashwin’s move to the BBL is a landmark moment for Indian cricket. After announcing his retirement from international cricket on December 18, 2025, and bidding farewell to the IPL on August 27, the Tamil Nadu-born spinner will now bring his wealth of experience to Australian shores.

“Thunder were crystal clear about how they’d use me and brave enough to back it. My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we’re fully aligned on my role,” Ashwin said, expressing his excitement about the new challenge.

He also praised Thunder skipper David Warner, adding, “I love how Dave Warner plays the game, and it’s always better when your leader shares your mindset. I can’t wait to perform for the Thunder Nation.”

Sydney Thunder Welcome Ashwin’s Leadership and Legacy

Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland hailed Ashwin’s signing as a significant boost for the franchise, calling him a “world-class player and mentor.”

“From the first time we spoke, Ashwin impressed everyone at Thunder with his passion, desire to win, and understanding of what makes our club special,” Copeland said.

“He will bring fresh energy and elite bowling mid-tournament, while his leadership and mentoring skills will be invaluable for our young players.”

Copeland also highlighted Ashwin’s potential to connect with Australia’s growing Indian diaspora, which he believes will inspire new fans to rally behind Sydney Thunder.

A Storied Career Across Formats

Ashwin’s T20 career speaks volumes about his consistency and skill. In 333 T20 matches, he has taken 317 wickets and scored 1233 runs. His IPL journey spans 221 games across five franchises — Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, and Rajasthan Royals — where he claimed 187 wickets and scored 833 runs.

For India, Ashwin featured in 65 T20Is, picking up 72 wickets and scoring 184 runs, and was a key part of the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squad.
