Rajasthan Royals confirmed on Saturday that head coach Rahul Dravid will not continue with the franchise ahead of IPL 2026. The Royals revealed that while Dravid was offered a broader role as part of a structural revamp, the former India captain declined the offer.
In a heartfelt statement, the franchise said:
“Rahul has been central to the Royals’ journey over many years. His leadership has influenced a generation of players, built strong values within the squad, and left an indelible mark on the culture of the franchise. The Rajasthan Royals, its players, and millions of fans worldwide extend heartfelt thanks to Rahul for his remarkable service.”
Disappointing IPL 2025 Season
Dravid’s comeback to the Royals dugout was expected to revive the team’s fortunes. However, RR endured a poor 2025 season, managing only four wins in 14 matches, and finishing ninth on the points table — just above Chennai Super Kings.
Regular skipper Sanju Samson was sidelined for five matches due to a side strain, forcing Riyan Parag to lead the team in his absence.
Dravid’s Long Association With RR
Dravid has a long-standing connection with Rajasthan Royals. He captained the team in 2012 and 2013, later serving as mentor in 2014 and 2015. After guiding India to the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, Dravid was unveiled as Royals’ new head coach on a multi-year contract in September 2024.
Expectations were high that he could lead RR to their second IPL title after their maiden win in 2008, but the stint lasted less than a year.
Looking Ahead to 2026
With Dravid stepping aside, Rajasthan Royals are expected to restructure their support staff as they look to rebuild and aim for a stronger campaign in IPL 2026.
