Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin found himself in the middle of a storm after his remarks on Dewald Brevis’ signing by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) sparked controversy. Ashwin had suggested that Brevis was paid an “extra” amount compared to his auction base price. His statement triggered widespread speculation online.
CSK Issues Official Statement
CSK quickly clarified the matter, stating that all procedures were followed in signing Brevis. The South African batter, who went unsold in the mega auction, was later brought in as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh. Since Gurjapneet had been bought for INR 2.20 crore, the same amount was paid to Brevis as per IPL rules.
Ashwin Explains His Stand
Responding to CSK’s clarification, Ashwin insisted he never implied wrongdoing. He explained that his comments were factual but blown out of proportion on social media.
“I focus more on cricket than the chatter. People can twist statements if they don’t watch the full video,” he said on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat.
Praise for Brevis’ Impact
Ashwin also praised Brevis’ batting form, calling him a “power-striker” and a “monstrous hitter against spin.” The 22-year-old recently scored his maiden T20I century against Australia, followed by a half-century in the same series. Ashwin noted that CSK had “struck gold” by signing him during his purple patch.
Why Clarifications Were Needed
Ashwin further explained that CSK’s clarification came because many fans doubted the signing process. He stressed that all IPL contracts go through strict checks with the BCCI, and no player can play without approval. Injury replacements, he reminded, are common and handled within IPL rules.
