Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth has once again questioned the team management’s decision-making, this time targeting Shubman Gill’s appointment as T20I vice-captain. He expressed disbelief over Gill’s continued selection despite poor form and raised concerns about India’s team balance and the omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Gill’s Struggles Continue
Gill’s recent performances have been underwhelming, scoring 10, 9, 24, 37, and 5* in his last five innings across ODIs and T20Is. Srikkanth, speaking on his Cheeky Cheeka YouTube channel, argued that Gill’s vice-captaincy status has made him “undroppable,” even when others are performing better.
“They won’t drop Gill for the next three games. They aren’t worried about anything else. He’s already confirmed as vice-captain for the T20 World Cup and the future captain. So they have to play him, no matter what. On what basis has he been appointed vice-captain?” Srikkanth questioned.
Concerns Over Team Balance
Srikkanth believes Gill’s elevation has created an imbalance in the side, forcing other key players out of their natural positions. He noted that Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have been left uncertain about their batting roles, while Arshdeep Singh continues to miss out from the playing XI.
“With Gill’s inclusion, the overall balance has gone for a toss. Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma don’t have fixed spots, and Arshdeep is missing out. The only good thing is that the T20 World Cup is in India — so they’ll manage somehow,” he added.
The Yashasvi Jaiswal Question
At the heart of Srikkanth’s criticism lies the continued omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been in stellar form both in the IPL and international cricket. Despite consistent performances, the young left-hander remains sidelined, raising questions about the selection logic.
Srikkanth’s remarks have reignited debate among fans and experts over whether merit and performance are taking a backseat to long-term grooming plans.
