Shreyas Iyer’s absence from India’s 15-member Asia Cup 2025 squad has been one of the biggest talking points since its announcement. Despite being in outstanding white-ball form, the 30-year-old batter did not find a place in the main squad or even among the reserves.
Iyer had a brilliant IPL season with Punjab Kings, scoring over 600 runs at a strike rate of 175 and leading the franchise to their first final in 11 years. Before that, he also captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and played a crucial role in India’s Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year.
Panesar’s Take On The Selection Call
Former England spinner Monty Panesar believes Iyer’s leadership credentials might have worked against him. Speaking to India Today, Panesar said:
“One reason Shreyas Iyer may be struggling to get into the Indian squad is because he brings those leadership skills, and right now they already have that covered. It gives them the chance to bring in someone younger, more exciting, and easier for coach Gautam Gambhir to manage.”
Runs Will Force His Way Back
Panesar, who was part of England’s famous 2012 Test series win in India, insisted Iyer still has the ability to push his way back with consistent performances.
“If he keeps scoring runs, he should be playing. His talent is unbelievable. I think India is so blessed that they can field two or three strong teams and still compete with the world,” he added.
India Begin Campaign On September 10
