Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj has opened up about the close bond he shares with Test captain Shubman Gill, highlighting both their on-field understanding and off-field camaraderie.
Speaking to Boria Majumdar on Revsportz, Siraj said,
“Shubman and I have been together for a long time. We played India A, spent time off the field, and made our Test debuts together at the MCG. We also reached No.1 in ODI rankings at the same time. We have so many memories together. He’s also the captain of Gujarat Titans — we bat at the nets together, talk a lot, and I keep telling him that you’re my bunny. Our understanding is very easy and it reflects on the field. He knows what I want and I know what he wants. I’m really proud of his growth as a captain. Now that he’s vice-captain for the Asia Cup, I hope he brings the trophy back. All the best to him and the team.”
A Partnership That Reflects in Performance
Siraj’s remarks underline the deep connection between the two cricketers, who have grown together through India A. Their mutual understanding in nets and matches has created a synergy that Siraj believes will continue to benefit the Indian cricket team, including in the upcoming Asia Cup.
Gill’s Stellar Form Abroad
From Leeds to London, Shubman Gill has made headlines for his consistent performances overseas, breaking historical records along the way. He finished his England tour as the leading run-scorer with 754 runs at an average of 75.40.
Gill made subtle adjustments to his technique, including bringing his bat ahead of his pads and tweaking his footwork to give himself more time to play his shots. These changes were crucial in helping him score four stunning centuries during the tour.
Rising to the Occasion
Gill also silenced critics who doubted his ability to succeed in overseas conditions, particularly in the number four spot previously held by legends Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. At Edgbaston, he scored a marathon 269, guiding India to their first-ever Test win at the venue.
First Captaincy and Future Assignments
In his debut Test as captain, Gill led India to a memorable 2-2 draw against England. His next assignment will be two home Tests against the West Indies in October, where his leadership and partnership with players like Siraj will be crucial.
