Maxwell Set to Return, Beardman in Line for Debut as Australia Rotate Squads Before Ashes

Australia are carefully managing their player workloads ahead of the home Ashes series, with Glenn Maxwell returning from injury and Mahli Beardman poised to make his international debut. The selectors have shuffled both the ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming India series to balance white-ball commitments with red-ball preparation.

Maxwell Back from Injury for T20Is

Glenn Maxwell, who fractured his wrist during training ahead of the New Zealand series, is set to return for the final three T20Is against India. His comeback will give Australia a big boost in the middle order as they fine-tune combinations ahead of the summer.

Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Hazlewood, and Sean Abbott have been released to play Sheffield Shield matches to sharpen their red-ball game before the first Ashes Test, starting November 21.

Labuschagne, who joined the ODI squad late as Cameron Green’s replacement but didn’t play the first two matches, will return to Queensland for their clash against New South Wales at the Gabba. That match will also see Steve Smith turn out for NSW.

Beardman’s Rapid Rise to the Big Stage

Among the new inclusions, Mahli Beardman’s selection has created a real buzz. The 20-year-old Western Australia quick was the Player of the Final at the U-19 World Cup last year, where his fiery spell of 3 for 15 helped seal the title.

With just five List A games and two BBL appearances to his name, Beardman has made a strong impression in domestic cricket this season, taking five wickets in two One-Day Cup matches. His selection is a clear signal that Australia continues to fast-track its next generation of pacers, following names like Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, and Mitch Owen.

Squad Shuffle: Strategic Moves Before the Ashes

To balance their squads, Jack Edwards, captain of NSW, has been added to the ODI squad for the third match at the SCG. Left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann also returns after missing the Adelaide ODI.

Josh Philippe, who filled in for Maxwell in New Zealand and later came in as cover for the injured Josh Inglis, joins the T20I squad for all five matches. Inglis, who is recovering from a calf injury, is expected to rejoin the ODI side in Sydney.

Hazlewood will be available for the first two T20Is, while Abbott will feature in the third before returning to Sheffield Shield cricket. With Pat Cummins still managing a back issue and Cameron Green easing back into bowling after surgery, Abbott remains a key part of the fast-bowling depth along with Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett.

Building Momentum Before a Huge Summer

Australia’s approach reflects a clear strategy — manage key players’ workloads, test new talent, and build momentum heading into the Ashes. Maxwell’s return brings firepower to the T20 setup, while Beardman’s selection represents a bold investment in youth.

With a packed home season ahead, Australia’s depth and rotation plan could play a decisive role in their quest to regain the Ashes.
