Kuldeep Yadav was left out of India’s playing XI in the opening ODI against Australia in Perth, with the team opting for Axar Patel and Washington Sundar to strengthen their batting depth. Unfortunately, the match was heavily affected by rain, and India suffered a 7-wicket defeat via the DLS method.
As India prepares for the second ODI, team selection will be under the spotlight again, with the men in blue looking to bounce back and level the series.
Kuldeep in Strong Form Ahead of Must-Win Clash
Kuldeep last featured in the Champions Trophy final and has been in terrific form in recent months. He picked up 17 wickets in the Asia Cup and then impressed in the home Test series against the West Indies.
Despite his red-hot form, he couldn’t find a place in the Perth XI as India prioritized batting depth over an extra spinner.
Team Selection Hinges on Pitch Conditions
Speaking ahead of the second ODI, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak explained that Kuldeep’s inclusion would depend entirely on the pitch and conditions.
“The decision is taken after assessing the wicket. It completely depends on the conditions whether you need an extra batter or a batter at number 8. It’s more about the balance of the team, rather than an individual,” Kotak said.
This suggests that Kuldeep could return if the Adelaide surface favors spin or if India looks to strengthen its bowling attack.
Jaiswal Might Still Have to Wait
Kotak was also asked about Yashasvi Jaiswal’s chances of featuring in the second ODI. While he didn’t rule out the possibility, he hinted that the young opener might have to wait a bit longer for his turn.
“He’s in the squad, he practices, and youngsters are pretty much aware that their turn will come. At the end of the day, only 11 can play, so you have to wait for your turn and then perform,” Kotak said.
What to Expect in Adelaide
With India trailing 0–1 in the series, the second ODI at Adelaide Oval is crucial. If conditions allow, Kuldeep Yadav may well return to bolster India’s attack, while Jaiswal might once again warm the bench.
