Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan didn’t hold back when discussing Karun Nair’s disappointing return to the Indian team during the England tour. After a long hiatus of eight years, Nair got a second chance to prove his worth following his brilliant domestic form, but he couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity. Scoring just 205 runs in 8 innings at an average of 25.62, Nair managed only one half-century, despite being in prime form before the series.
Nair’s Impressive Domestic Performances
Before the England series, Nair had shown excellent form in domestic cricket. He piled up 863 runs in the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy at an average of 53.93, including four centuries. His performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy was even more stunning, amassing 779 runs in just eight innings with an average of 389.50, including five centuries. His strong showings led to his long-awaited recall to the Indian side.
However, his international return was underwhelming. Despite promising starts, he failed to convert them into big scores, including a crucial opportunity in the Lord’s Test.
“A Real Chance to Win the Lord’s Test” – Irfan Pathan
Irfan Pathan gave Nair a score of just 4 out of 10, citing his inability to make the most of several opportunities during the England series.
“Karun Nair had a real chance to win the match for India at Lord’s, but he didn’t seize it. He got plenty of chances but couldn’t convert them into big scores. Cricket gave him a second chance, but he failed to make the most of it.”
Pathan also pointed out that Nair showed technical weaknesses throughout the series, especially with his struggles against short-pitched deliveries.
Technical Struggles and Lack of Consistency
One of the key criticisms Pathan made was regarding Nair’s vulnerability to short balls, which seemed to unsettle him, especially in the Oval Test.
“At the Oval, when the bouncers were used, he looked shaken. He built up nicely at times, but then played a loose shot and got out. It was that inconsistency that cost him.”
The Road Ahead for Karun Nair
Nair’s disappointing performance in this high-profile series raises questions about his future in the Indian team. While his domestic form was exceptional, the lack of consistency on the international stage has put his spot in the team in jeopardy. With India’s middle-order competition heating up, it remains to be seen if Nair will get another opportunity to represent the country.
