Kapil Dev Questions Jasprit Bumrah’s Long-Term Career Sustainability

Kapil Dev has raised a major question about Jasprit Bumrah’s future in cricket. The former India captain wonders if Bumrah’s unusual bowling action will let him play at the top level for the next 10–12 years.

Bumrah’s short run-up and unorthodox release make him one of the hardest bowlers to face in modern cricket. Batters often struggle to read his length and pace early in the innings. This is a big reason why he is the No. 1 Test bowler in the ICC rankings.

Injuries Keep Returning

Since his debut in 2016, Bumrah has battled several injuries. These have kept him out of big tournaments like the 2022 T20 World Cup, 2023 World Test Championship Final, and the 2025 Champions Trophy. The BCCI now manages his workload carefully to avoid further setbacks.

Recently, Bumrah missed two Tests in England for workload management. This move led to criticism from ex-players, including Irfan Pathan and Mohammad Azharuddin. They accused him of “picking and choosing” matches on an important tour.

Kapil’s Detailed View

Speaking on The Squirrels YouTube channel, Kapil explained why awkward bowling actions are so hard to face. He compared Bumrah’s style to Lasith Malinga’s, saying such bowlers give batters very little time to adjust.

“Bumrah’s short run-up generating such pace is incredible,” Kapil said. “But his action is not like a typical athlete’s. That’s why he is so dangerous. The question is — can he keep doing this for 10 or 12 years? As cricketers, we feel it’s tough.”
