India bowling coach Morne Morkel has finally responded to the burning question fans have been asking for months: Will Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma play the 2027 ODI World Cup?
According to Morkel, the answer is yes — as long as they stay fit and keep putting in the hard work.
Morkel Backs Rohit & Kohli to Continue Till 2027
Ever since Kohli and Rohit returned to international cricket in the ODI series against Australia, discussions have intensified regarding their future. With the next World Cup still two years away, their participation remains a major talking point.
Both senior batters now feature only in ODIs after retiring from Tests and T20Is. This reduced workload has sparked concerns about whether they can maintain form and fitness without regular competitive cricket.
Speculation also suggests that the duo may be asked to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to stay match-ready ahead of the New Zealand series.
Despite the noise, Morkel expressed complete confidence in the two icons.
“They’re quality players. As long as they’re happy to put in the hard work and the fitness… I’ve always believed in experience. You don’t find that anywhere,”

He added that if the two feel mentally and physically ready, there is no reason to stop them from pushing towards another World Cup run.
Recent Form: Mixed Signs but Plenty of Class
Rohit Sharma returned strongly against Australia, scoring a half-century and a hundred to win Player of the Series, though he looked rusty in the first ODI.
Kohli, meanwhile, endured two golden ducks before anchoring India with an unbeaten 74 in Sydney.
Morkel stressed there is no substitute for experience, especially in big tournaments:
“They’ve won trophies. They know how to play big tournaments… If they feel their bodies can handle it, by all means.”

Morkel also shared a candid reflection from his playing days:
“I’ve had sleepless nights bowling to them. I know what goes through a bowler’s mind when they’re at the crease.”
Rohit & Kohli’s Own World Cup Aspirations
Rohit Sharma has already declared his desire to play the 2027 World Cup, driven by the heartbreak of the 2023 final loss to Australia in Ahmedabad.
Kohli hasn’t spoken publicly about his plans, but insiders believe he too wants one final shot at lifting the ODI World Cup trophy before bowing out.
