The wait is almost over — the 13th edition of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 is set to take place from September 30 to November 2, bringing together the world’s top teams in a battle for glory. Hosted across India and Sri Lanka, this edition promises high-intensity cricket, unforgettable moments, and a new chapter in women’s cricket history.
A New Chance at History for India
India will once again chase their dream of lifting the prestigious trophy, something they narrowly missed in 2017 when they lost to England in a thrilling final. Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, who will captain the side for the first time in a World Cup, the team is in strong form — winning 10 of their last 14 ODIs — and will look to make the most of home conditions.
“This World Cup is more than just a tournament. It’s a chance to create history,” said Kaur, expressing her determination to bring home the title.
Defending Champions and Past Winners
Australia, the most successful team in Women’s World Cup history, enters the tournament as the defending champion after defeating England in the 2022 final. New Zealand remains the only other team to have lifted the trophy, having done so 25 years ago.
The Women’s World Cup — held every four years — is regarded as the pinnacle of women’s international cricket, and this year, the stage is set for another unforgettable competition.
Teams and Format
Eight teams will compete for the ultimate prize in women’s cricket:
The format remains straightforward: the top four teams from the round-robin stage will advance to the semi-finals — with 1st facing 4th and 2nd taking on 3rd.
Due to ongoing political tensions, Pakistan will play all its matches in Colombo, and if they reach the final, it will be hosted there. Otherwise, the final will take place at Navi Mumbai.
A Landmark Tournament for the Hosts
This will be India’s fourth time hosting the Women’s ODI World Cup, after 1978, 1997, and 2013. It will also mark a historic moment for Sri Lanka, as they host the tournament for the very first time.
With passionate crowds, iconic venues, and world-class talent on display, the 2025 edition is shaping up to be one of the most exciting Women’s World Cups ever.
