ICC Punishes India Star for Provoking South African Batter in Ranchi ODI

An Indian cricketer has been officially reprimanded and handed a demerit point by the ICC for a Code of Conduct breach during the first ODI in Ranchi.

India Win the Thriller, But Harshit Rana Faces ICC Action

The ODI opener between India and South Africa in Ranchi turned out to be a nail-biter, with India edging out the visitors by 17 runs in a high-scoring contest. While the hosts celebrated their 1-0 lead in the three-match series, one of the standout performers, Harshit Rana, found himself in trouble with the ICC.

Rana, one of India’s most promising fast bowlers, has been penalised for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. As part of the punishment, he received an official reprimand along with one demerit point, the first on his disciplinary record in the last two years.

Why Was Harshit Rana Penalised?

According to the ICC, Rana violated Article 2.5, which deals with “using language, actions or gestures that are derogatory or that could provoke an aggressive response from a batter following their dismissal.”

The incident occurred in the 22nd over of South Africa’s chase. After dismissing Dewald Brevis, Rana made a gesture toward the dressing room — an action the ICC deemed potentially provocative.

Rana accepted the charge immediately, agreeing to the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson. As a result, no formal hearing was needed.

The charge was filed by on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, with assistance from third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit.

A Level 1 breach typically results in a reprimand, a fine of up to 50% of the player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Rana’s Impact on the Match

Despite the disciplinary setback, Rana played a major role in India’s win. He struck twice in his very first over, removing Ryan Rickelton (0) and Quinton de Kock (0) to dismantle South Africa’s top order. Later, he returned to dismiss Brevis (37), providing India with another crucial breakthrough in a tense chase.
