The International Cricket Council (ICC) issued a clarification after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma mysteriously vanished from the latest ODI batting rankings on Wednesday. Both Indian stalwarts, ranked No. 2 and No. 4 just last week, were missing from the top 100, sparking confusion and intense debate among fans on social media.
An ICC spokesperson later admitted it was a mistake. Speaking to Hindustan Times, the official said, “There was an error in our rankings tables today, but it has been rectified.” However, as of now, the updated rankings are yet to reflect on the ICC website, which still shows the last ODI chart dated August 10, 2025.
What Went Wrong?
Cricket followers were left stunned when the two senior Indian batters, who played key roles in India’s Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year, suddenly disappeared from the ODI rankings. Just last week, Rohit was placed second behind Shubman Gill, while Kohli held the fourth spot with 736 rating points.
The absence came despite both players being active in ODIs. Neither retirement nor inactivity rules applied, making it clear that the change was a technical glitch.
Rohit and Kohli last featured in February 2025 during the ICC Champions Trophy in the UAE. Rohit’s match-winning knock in the final and Kohli’s consistent group-stage performances were central to India’s long-awaited ODI title win.
Ranking Shuffle After Error
Following the glitch, Babar Azam moved up to No. 2, while Shubman Gill retained his top position with 756 points. Kohli and Rohit’s sudden drop created a storm online, with #ViratKohli and #RohitSharma trending as fans speculated about retirements or ICC foul play.
The ICC has assured the issue was purely technical and rankings will be corrected soon.
