“I Remembered My Father, The Way You…”: Abhishek’s Heartfelt Praise for Captain Suryakumar

Abhishek Sharma lit up the Asia Cup 2024 with a stunning half-century against Pakistan, breaking Yuvraj Singh’s long-standing record for the fastest fifty in Indo-Pak clashes. His aggressive 74 off just 36 deliveries, combined with a 105-run opening stand alongside vice-captain Shubman Gill, gave India the perfect start. The partnership also went down as India’s highest opening stand against Pakistan in T20Is.

For his brilliant effort, the 25-year-old was named Player of the Match, sparking widespread praise across the cricketing world.

Bond With Shubman Gill

After the match, Abhishek spoke about his special connection with Gill during a chat on BCCI.tv. The duo’s camaraderie, he revealed, goes all the way back to junior cricket.

“There’s one thing we’ve been discussing since U-12s, and we still talk about it now. Because we know each other so well, I can almost predict his shots — and he knows mine. Sometimes, just a glance is enough,” Abhishek explained.

Guidance From Suryakumar Yadav

In an emotional moment, Abhishek revealed how captain Suryakumar Yadav’s words from the boundary line reminded him of his father.

“Today I remembered my father while batting because the way you were guiding me to take singles, he used to do the same. Sitting in front of the sightscreen, that’s where I focus most. Since you were there today, I think my innings stretched longer,” Abhishek told his skipper.

Credit to Family and Support Staff

Abhishek also highlighted the role of his family and India’s coaching staff in shaping his success.

“It was special. Whenever my family has come to the ground, our team has won convincingly. But like I said at the presentation, the coach’s and captain’s messages are key in performances like this,” he concluded.
