Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes Shreyas Iyer’s return to the T20I setup could spell trouble for Shivam Dube. Despite being part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad last year, Ashwin feels Dube may not find a spot in the Asia Cup squad.
Ashwin pointed out that Iyer is the best fit for the No. 3 role, with Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav alternating between four and five.
“If Shreyas Iyer is brought back, then Shivam Dube doesn’t have a place. He can only be a backup option,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
Why Dube Might Miss Out
Shivam Dube has been a regular in India’s T20I setup for nearly two years. However, his strike rate of 132.22 in IPL 2025, where he scored 357 runs for Chennai Super Kings, was his lowest in four seasons. Ashwin feels this dip, along with team balance, makes it difficult to fit him in.
Jitesh Sharma as Backup Wicketkeeper
Ashwin also touched on the wicketkeeping slot. With Sanju Samson all but confirmed as first-choice, the second keeper’s spot is still up for grabs.
“The one who stands out for me is Jitesh Sharma. His IPL performances and finishing ability give him an edge,” Ashwin noted.
This could further reduce Dube’s chances, as Jitesh’s inclusion strengthens India’s lower order.
Selection Puzzle Ahead
Ashwin’s remarks underline the tricky decisions awaiting the selectors. While Dube adds firepower, Iyer’s stability and Jitesh’s finishing ability could push him out of the Asia Cup squad.
