Jasprit Bumrah’s absence from the fifth Test at The Oval has reignited debate over his long-term fitness and availability. Despite starting the England series with a five-wicket haul at Headingley, Bumrah played only three of the five Tests, with the team citing back concerns and workload management.
India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate defended the decision, saying it was made in “good faith” based on Bumrah’s bowling loads. However, the cautious approach has raised questions about how long India can afford to hold back their premier fast bowler.
McGrath: “To limit him to Tests would be a shame”
Legendary Australian pacer Glenn McGrath weighed in on Bumrah’s career trajectory, expressing concern over the idea of restricting him to Test cricket alone.
“You look at Bumrah, he’s so effective in ODI and T20 cricket. To limit himself to Test cricket would be a shame. But he’s got to work out what’s best for him,” McGrath told The Indian Express.
McGrath emphasized that Bumrah’s short spells could make him predictable and easier to play against unless supported by other quality fast bowlers2.
Unique action, tough demands
McGrath also highlighted the physical toll of Bumrah’s unique bowling style. With a short run-up and explosive final strides, Bumrah’s action places immense stress on his body.
“What he does is tough on the body. He needs an off-season to get stronger and fitter,” McGrath said at the MRF Pace Foundation3.
He added that 99.9% of fast bowlers need time off to recover and build strength, especially with packed international schedules.
India needs more pace depth
McGrath urged India to develop a stronger pool of fast bowlers to ease the burden on Bumrah. He praised bowlers like Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj, but stressed the need for consistent support to allow Bumrah to bowl longer spells without risking injury5.
“You want your best bowler bowling. But he needs help from the rest of the pace pack,” McGrath said
