Sunil Gavaskar didn’t hold back on Day 5 of the Lord’s Test as he ripped into the DRS system following KL Rahul’s controversial dismissal. The India opener, who looked solid and composed during his knock of 39, was given out LBW on review after England captain Ben Stokes challenged the on-field decision.
Initially, umpire Sharfuddoula said not out. But the ball-tracking showed three reds—impact, line, and wickets—prompting the reversal. The moment Rahul walked back, Gavaskar’s voice rose in disbelief.
“I am questioning the technology,” the India legend said bluntly on commentary.
DRS Drama: Gavaskar Calls Out Inconsistencies
Gavaskar was visibly frustrated. His concern wasn’t just about this single decision—it was about the pattern throughout the series. India, he pointed out, have consistently suffered reversals through DRS, while England have enjoyed marginal calls going their way.
“Surprisingly, this one didn’t bounce much. But when Indian bowlers were bowling, almost every review showed the ball going over the stumps. Why the inconsistency?”
His remarks followed a series of questionable DRS calls—most notably Joe Root’s LBW escape off Siraj, which was ruled umpire’s call despite replays suggesting otherwise.
India’s Collapse Fuels the Frustration
India started Day 5 at 58/4, needing 135 runs for a win and still holding hope. But Jofra Archer shattered those dreams early by bowling Rishabh Pant, and then KL Rahul’s dismissal triggered a collapse. In total, India lost four wickets for just 54 runs in the session.
England now stand just two wickets away from clinching the Test and a 2-1 lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Reiffel Under Fire Again
Gavaskar wasn’t alone in his frustration. Umpire Paul Reiffel has faced sharp criticism throughout this match. He earlier turned down the LBW against Root, and gave Shubman Gill out caught behind—despite no contact with the bat, which was reversed on review.
Ashwin also slammed Reiffel for what he called a repeated pattern of calls going against India.
As Tensions Rise, DRS Faces Scrutiny
With the match slipping away from India and tempers flaring in the commentary box, one thing is clear—players and former greats alike are losing faith in the review system. For Gavaskar, the tipping point may just have arrived.
