‘Gauti Bhai Was Clear…’: Suryakumar Yadav Opens Up On Sanju Samson’s Asia Cup Batting Role

Suryakumar Yadav has revealed how head coach Gautam Gambhir firmly backed Sanju Samson’s place in India’s T20I playing XI during the Asia Cup 2025. While many expected Jitesh Sharma to get the nod over Samson, Gambhir had made it clear from day one that Samson would play — regardless of the batting position.

Gambhir’s Backing for Samson

Heading into the tournament, the common assumption was that Jitesh Sharma would slot in ahead of Samson, especially since Shubman Gill was set to open. But Gambhir’s instructions were decisive.

“With the addition of Shubman Gill and Jitesh Sharma in the squad, everyone thought Jitesh would start over Sanju Samson. But Gauti bhai was clear from day one that Sanju should play, no matter which batting position he is in,” Suryakumar said on Vimal Kumar’s podcast.

Samson went on to anchor India’s middle order in a crucial Asia Cup victory over Pakistan — a performance that strengthened his claim to the role.

Samson’s Transition From Opener to Middle Order

Samson has been one of India’s most consistent openers over the past year, smashing three centuries at the top. But the Asia Cup saw him take on a new challenge — moving down the order to provide stability in the middle.

The wicketkeeper-batter adapted quickly, embracing the shift with maturity and responsibility, proving his value in different match situations.

“Wearing the Indian Jersey Means Everything”

At the CEAT Cricket Ratings Awards in Mumbai, Samson opened up about his mindset and what it means to represent India.

“When you wear that Indian jersey, you cannot say no to anything. I have really worked very hard to wear that jersey and more importantly, to stay in their dressing room,” Samson said.

“I take a lot of pride in doing a job for my country. So even if they want to bat me at number 9, maybe bowl some left-arm spin, I think I am happy to do that as well. So whatever job for the country, I think I do not mind,” he added.

A Team Player at Heart

Samson’s statement reflects a team-first mentality — something the Indian camp has increasingly emphasized under Gambhir’s leadership. His flexibility to adapt to different roles has made him a key asset in India’s T20I setup, especially in high-pressure tournaments like the Asia Cup.

With Gambhir’s backing and Suryakumar’s trust, Samson looks set to play a defining role in India’s T20 plans heading into the next World Cup.
