Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has finally addressed the debate surrounding the omission of players like Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav, calling such decisions the “toughest” part of his coaching role. Speaking to the BCCI, Gambhir emphasized that honest, clear, and private communication with players is the most important part of his job — especially when delivering difficult news.
Gambhir on Team Selection Challenges
“Look, that’s probably the toughest part for me as a coach,” Gambhir said. “Sometimes, when there’s so much quality sitting on the bench, it’s painful to know that not everyone can make the playing XI. Ultimately, we have to pick the best combination for that particular day.”
Gambhir added that while every player deserves a chance, selection depends on balance and conditions, not individual merit alone. His philosophy as a coach has leaned heavily towards versatility, often giving preference to all-rounders like Harshit Rana and Nitish Reddy over specialists.
This approach has drawn criticism, especially since Arshdeep — India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is — and Kuldeep — the country’s best white-ball spinner — have found fewer opportunities recently.
“Communication Should Stay Between Coach and Player”
Gambhir also highlighted that while players naturally feel disappointed when benched, maintaining transparent communication is crucial.
“For me, the most important thing is the conversation and communication. It needs to be clear, honest, and from the heart,” he said. “Sometimes these are hard conversations, but if you are straightforward and genuine, players understand that.”
The former India opener also subtly addressed the criticism of favoritism, saying that such narratives arise only when internal communication is made public.
“It’s a conversation between a player and a coach, and it should stay there — rather than people making hue and cry or floating different theories about it,” he added. “This group has been incredibly transparent and honest. That’s how we want this dressing room to remain.”
Balancing Performance and Team Dynamics
Since taking over as head coach, Gambhir has emphasized creating a balanced and fearless squad — one that values adaptability across formats. His support for Harshit Rana, who debuted in 2024 and has impressed with his all-round performances, reflects this mindset.
While Gambhir’s decisions have drawn divided opinions, his focus remains on building a transparent, communication-driven team culture — one where honesty prevails, even when tough calls have to be made.
