India’s decision to skip the customary post-match handshake with Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 was not a spontaneous act, but a carefully thought-out move. According to fresh reports, the stance was planned in advance by head coach Gautam Gambhir and senior players, with the final approval coming from top BCCI officials.
The Background to the Controversy
India defeated Pakistan by seven wickets in Dubai, chasing down 128 runs in just 15.5 overs. While the emphatic win pushed them closer to a Super Four berth, the bigger talking point was the team’s refusal to shake hands with Pakistan players afterward.
The decision came amid heavy criticism of India’s participation in the tournament at all, with opposition parties and sections of the public accusing the BCCI of ignoring the grief of families who lost loved ones in the April Pahalgam terror attack.
How the Decision Was Taken
A PTI report revealed that Gambhir, along with senior players, was unanimous in his belief that no handshake should take place at any stage of the game. The plan was thoroughly deliberated and later received the green light from senior figures in the BCCI.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav, who anchored the chase with an unbeaten 47, dedicated the victory to the victims of the terror attack.
“Together, we came here, we took a call. We stand with the victims of Pahalgam and dedicate this victory to our Armed Forces,” Suryakumar said.
When asked if the gesture was politically motivated, he replied:
“Few things in life are ahead of sportsman’s spirit.”
Gambhir Echoes the Sentiment
Speaking to broadcasters after the match, Gambhir reinforced the team’s stand:
“This match was important because we wanted to show solidarity towards the victims of the Pahalgam attack. More importantly, we want to thank the Armed Forces for Operation Sindoor. We’ll always try to make the country proud.”
