With the Asia Cup 2025 squad selection approaching, Shubman Gill’s place in the T20I setup has become a hot topic. Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh has strongly backed the Test captain, insisting that Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir should not overlook him while finalizing the squad.
Gill, who recently led India to a 2-2 series draw in England in his first assignment as Test skipper, was outstanding with the bat, scoring 554 runs in five Tests at an average of 75.40. Now, as selectors debate India’s top-order options, Harbhajan believes Gill has shown enough to warrant a recall to the shortest format.
Gill’s T20I and IPL record
The 25-year-old has already featured in 21 T20Is, scoring 578 runs at a strike rate of 139.27. He is also among the rare Indian batters to score centuries across all three formats of the game.
In the IPL, Gill’s consistency is undeniable. He won the Orange Cap in 2023, piling up 890 runs in 17 innings. Harbhajan reminded that Gill’s ability isn’t limited to traditional stroke play. “He doesn’t just bat at a strike rate of 120–130; he can accelerate to 160 as well. He has the basics and technique to succeed in any format,” he said.
‘Shubman Gill is an all-format player’
Harbhajan further stressed that Gill’s adaptability makes him an invaluable asset. “Yes, we have players like Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma, but you cannot underestimate Shubman Gill. He is an all-format player who can anchor an innings and also dominate when required. Fans love fours and sixes, but teams also need batters who can hold things together,” Harbhajan added.
