Cricket West Indies is mourning the loss of Bernard Julien, one of the heroes of their historic 1975 World Cup triumph, who passed away at the age of 75 in Valsayn, northern Trinidad. Julien was instrumental in the West Indies’ title-winning run during the inaugural 1975 World Cup. He dismantled Sri Lanka with a match-winning spell of 4/20 in the group stage and followed it up with 4/27 in the semi-final against New Zealand.
In the final against Australia, Julien chipped in with a valuable 26 off 37 balls, contributing to the team’s historic victory. His performances throughout the tournament showcased his all-round prowess and cemented his reputation as one of the most dependable cricketers of his generation.

Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd paid tribute to Julien’s dedication and spirit.
“He always gave you over 100 per cent. He never shirked his duties, and I could always rely on him with bat and ball,” Lloyd recalled while speaking to the Trinidad & Tobago Guardian. “What a fine cricketer. He enjoyed himself, was loved by everyone, and held in high regard wherever we went.”

Bernard Julien represented West Indies in 24 Test matches and 12 ODIs between 1973 and 1981. He scored 866 runs and took 50 wickets in Tests, while adding 86 runs and 18 wickets in ODIs. Beyond the numbers, he was remembered for his passion, energy, and the vital role he played in shaping West Indies’ dominance during the 1970s.
