Deepti Sharma’s Brilliant Start Could ‘Make Other Teams Nervous’ at Women’s World Cup

India’s star all-rounder Deepti Sharma is stealing the spotlight at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, delivering match-winning performances with both bat and ball. Former Australian captain Meg Lanning believes Deepti’s red-hot form could “make some other sides very nervous” as the tournament progresses.

Dominating with Bat and Ball

Deepti has been India’s standout performer in the early stages of the competition. She currently leads the wicket-takers’ chart with six wickets in just two games, including a superb 3/45 against Pakistan.

Her contribution with the bat has been equally crucial — she scored a run-a-ball 53 in the opening match against Sri Lanka, playing a vital role in stabilizing the innings when India needed it most.

Lanning: ‘She Can Settle Things Down or Take Charge’

Meg Lanning praised Deepti’s versatility and experience, highlighting how she can adapt her game to any situation.

“She’s obviously got a lot of experience now and understands the conditions well. She’s found a really good spot in the middle order to play how she wants,” Lanning told the ICC.

“The good thing with Deepti is she can come in if you’ve lost a few wickets and settle things down, or she can be more aggressive if needed. That’s a great asset to have,” she added.

Lanning also lauded Deepti’s bowling intelligence. “With the ball, she’s very clever — subtle changes make her very effective. Starting the tournament so well will give her confidence, and it’ll make other sides nervous to see her in such good form — especially with so many other match-winners in the Indian team.”

India’s Confidence Grows Despite Key Batters’ Form

Even without big scores from star batters Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur, India has made a strong statement. Lanning believes this will boost the team’s belief going forward.

“They’ve started really well, and what’s encouraging is they’re winning without major contributions from Mandhana and Harmanpreet,” Lanning said. “When those two start firing, it will take them to another level.”

Two Strong Wins and a Big Challenge Ahead

India began their World Cup campaign with a 59-run win over co-hosts Sri Lanka, followed by an 88-run victory against Pakistan, taking them to the top of the points table in the eight-team tournament.

Next up, India will face South Africa on October 9 at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam, before a highly anticipated clash against defending champions Australia on October 12.
