Dane van Niekerk Ends Retirement, Joins South Africa’s World Cup Camp

Former South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk has made a stunning U-turn on her retirement and been named in South Africa’s 20-member training camp squad ahead of the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. The camp will take place in Durban from August 25 to September 1, followed by a three-match ODI series in Pakistan starting September 16 — their final preparation before the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

From Retirement to Revival

Van Niekerk had stepped away from international cricket in 2023 after missing the Women’s T20 World Cup on home soil, failing to pass a 2km fitness test. However, she has now reignited her international career, admitting the break only deepened her passion for representing South Africa.

Sharing her thoughts on social media, she wrote:

“I’ve decided to revoke my retirement from international cricket. The time away has reminded me how much I’ve missed representing my country. I’m fully committed to giving everything to once again have that opportunity.”

Fresh Faces in the Squad

The squad announcement also brought good news for uncapped all-rounder Luyanda Nzuza, who receives her maiden senior call-up after impressing in the U19 Women’s World Cup earlier this year.

Meanwhile, stars like Laura Wolvaardt, Chloe Tryon, and Marizanne Kapp are not part of the camp as they are currently featuring in The Hundred in England.

Coach’s Vision for World Cup Prep

South Africa Women’s head coach Mandla Mashimbyi stressed the importance of the Durban camp in shaping the team for the global stage.

“It’s an exciting time to be part of this group as we build towards the World Cup. The players have put in a huge amount of work, and this camp will be crucial in finalising key areas of our preparation before we board the plane as a united force.”

What’s Next?

The final squad for the Pakistan ODIs and the World Cup will be announced in early September. With van Niekerk back in the mix and young talents stepping up, South Africa will be aiming to strike the right balance of experience and energy ahead of the marquee tournament.
