The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly upset with head coach Gautam Gambhir over his post-match comments about the Kolkata pitch. India had lost the first Test to South Africa by 30 runs at Eden Gardens, played from November 14 to 16. According to a report in the Hindustan Times, the board was not pleased with Gambhir’s remarks but is unlikely to act immediately. However, his position may come under pressure if India fail to perform in the 2026 T20 World Cup at home.
Board Not Happy With Gambhir’s Pitch Remarks
The report states that the BCCI did not appreciate Gambhir’s direct comments about the Kolkata surface. Even though the board will not sack him right now, his role is expected to be reviewed later this year. Since there are not many coaching alternatives available, Gambhir will continue for the time being. Still, the T20 World Cup from February 7 to March 8, 2026, is likely to decide his future.
The report added:
“While the BCCI is not pleased with Gambhir’s strong opinions on the pitch, there will be no immediate action. But his job could be questioned if India underperform in the T20 World Cup.”
Gambhir Defended the Eden Gardens Pitch
After India failed to chase 124 runs, Gambhir defended the Kolkata pitch. He said the surface played exactly the way the team had requested before the game.
“This is exactly the pitch we were looking for. The curator was very supportive. This is what we wanted, and this is what we got. When you don’t play well, this is what happens,” Gambhir said.
He further explained that the wicket was not unplayable. According to him, players could score runs if they showed patience and applied themselves.
“Yes, it may not allow flamboyant shots, but it still offered opportunities. There were no demons in this wicket. It tested technique, toughness, and temperament. You must know how to play turn. This is what we asked for, and this is what we got,” he added.
