BCCI Tells Rohit Sharma to “Focus on Fitness and Performance” Amid Speculation About His Future

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly advised Rohit Sharma to avoid reacting to speculation regarding his future and instead keep his attention firmly on fitness and performance. The guidance comes at a time when conversations around Rohit’s long-term role in international cricket have intensified.

Rohit, who retired from T20Is in June 2024 and Test cricket in May 2025, is currently active only in ODIs. Ahead of last month’s three-match series in Australia, many questioned whether the ODI format would also be his next exit. But Rohit silenced all such rumours by scoring a century and a half-century, finishing as the top run-scorer of the series.

Rohit Prepares for South Africa ODIs

The Indian skipper will next feature in the three-match ODI series against South Africa, with games scheduled in:

  • Ranchi – November 30
  • Raipur – December 3
  • Visakhapatnam – December 6

Rohit remains India’s third-highest run-scorer in ODIs, and the BCCI wants him to maintain that elite standard as he continues to anchor the team’s top order.

BCCI’s Message: Stay Aggressive, Avoid Distractions

According to a Times of India report, the BCCI has urged Rohit to “just focus on fitness and performance” and ignore ongoing chatter about his retirement plans.

A BCCI source noted that the board wants Rohit to continue playing his fearless, attacking style, especially as an opener—something they felt was missing during the Australia series.

“It is expected that he continues to lead by example as a fearless batter at the top,” the source said. “The conditions in Australia were tough, but it did look like he was avoiding taking risks. Both Rohit and Virat are expected to set the tone for the younger batters around them.”

BCCI to Discuss Rohit & Kohli’s Future Plans Post SA Series

The report also states that once the ODI series against South Africa concludes, the BCCI plans to hold a meeting with selectors and team management. The aim will be to finalise a long-term plan for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, keeping the 2027 ODI World Cup firmly in sight.

“It’s very important that players of Rohit and Kohli’s stature are given clarity on their roles and what is expected of them. They cannot play with uncertainty,” the source added.
